Congratulations to Student Council, their sponsors Ms. Amy Bales and Ms. Beth Gorab, all of our students and staff, and all of our school community for again achieving the "top middle school" distinction for donations to the Harvest of Love Food Drive.  The CMJH community raised 370 pounds of food and collected over $2,800 for this year's drive.  When this is converted to total pounds of food donated, it is nearly 29,000 pounds of food.  Thanks to everyone for their participation and generosity.

This year’s Winter Dance is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1st from 6:00-8:00 PM, and the charge will be $5.00 per student.  While this is not a formal dance, most of our students take the opportunity to dress up more than usual; most of the girls wear dresses, and most of the boys wear slacks and a collared shirt (boys may not wear shorts or hats).  Our normal dress code applies: “Clothing must not bare traditionally private parts of the body, must cover everything from chest to mid-thigh, and shoes must be worn at all times.”  Additionally, “clothing may not be sheer, strapless, backless, and undergarments shall not be intentionally visible.”  If students show up in an outfit that does not meet the District dress code, they will not be allowed into the dance and will be asked to change before entering.  If students have a question about their outfit, they can ask Mr. Watkins or Mrs. Johnson prior to the dance.  This dance, like all of our dances, is for current CMJH students only; guests are not allowed.  The dance will end promptly at 8:00, so please be on time to pick up your child.  Please know that this dance will be attended by 300-400 students, so the traffic at pick-up time will be very heavy.  Please have a plan with your child about where you will pick him/her up.

The first day of exams, Dec. 18th, will be a full day of school.  Dec. 19th, 20th, and 21st will be half days where students will only take two final exams per day; students can enter the building at 8:35 and are finished with their day at 11:35.  The specific exam schedule can be found on the CMJH website.  Some important reminders about final exams:

*In ACCESS on Dec. 11th, we will have students create a “Final Exam Preparation Plan” to help them in budgeting their time and planning their study sessions.  Ask your child to see his/her plan.

*Most, if not all, teachers will be providing students with study guides and/or reviews to help guide their studying and help them focus on the most important material.

*While it typically creates additional stress and angst for our students, it is sometimes unavoidable that students miss some final exams.  We reserve Dec. 22nd as a make-up day if students are sick on one of the other final exam days.  If you know your child will be absent for his/her exams, please contact your child’s teachers and me to set up an early exam or a make-up exam.

This year, our annual food drive will be from Nov. 9th-Nov. 15th.  Care and Share is a food bank in Southern Colorado that distributes food to over 300 agencies; these agencies then give the food directly to people in need.  CMJH Student Council and their sponsors, Ms. Amy Bales and Ms. Beth Gorab, spearhead the food drive.  They will be conducting an ACCESS class competition, awarding prizes to the top three donating classes.  Canned goods and non-perishable items are greatly appreciated, but monetary donation have the greatest impact on our community.  In fact, for every $1 donated, Care and Share can purchase approximately 10 lbs. of food which is the equivalent of 8 meals.  CMJH, year after year, is one of the top donation raising middle level schools in the area.  Let’s do it again this year!

Both 7th and 8th graders will take their school pictures and receive their ID card on their orientation day whether they choose to order school pictures or not.  These pictures will be used for the yearbook.  If parents are interested in ordering school pictures, there are two ways of doing so.  Parents can either order pictures online, or they can print off the brochure and send money in with their student on orientation day.  For any student who may miss orientation day or for students who are not satisfied with their pictures, there will be a picture retake day in September.

If your 8th grader is interested in being on the CMHS Student Council or your 7th grader is interested in serving on the Student Council as an 8th grader next year, there are some very important dates coming up.  There is a brief but mandatory meeting in Ms. Bales room (rm. 204) at 2:45 on April 10th.  Petitions will be due to Ms. Bales or Ms. Gorab by 3:00 PM on April 17th.  Students interested in running for officer positions need to have their campaign speech filmed, and they will be aired from April 24th-April 26th on T-Bird TV.  Elections will be held during ACCESS on Thursday, April 27th.    The initial meeting on April 10th and the petition deadline of 3:00 PM on April 17th are very firm, so if there are any conflicts with either of those dates, students MUST contact Ms. Bales or Ms. Gorab PRIOR to the date.  For all the details about campaigning, click HERE.

This year’s Pennies for Patients fundraiser will take place March 13-17.  Student Council will be leading the collection efforts by visiting ACCESS classes and keeping track of donation totals for each class.  There are classroom prizes for the top three finishers.  All proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) which supports cancer research and patient services.  Leukemia is the most common cancer in children, adolescents, and young adults under the age of 20. Cheyenne Mountain Jr. High can help make a difference by donating any money, not just pennies, during this fundraising effort. Please consider supporting this very worthy cause.
